Alessandro De Tullio’s Pole Haul Jumps to Seven at Road America
4 HOURS AGO
Alessandro de Tullio continued his mastery of qualifying this season in INDY NXT by Firestone, sweeping both pole positions for the Grand Prix of Road America doubleheader on Saturday, giving himself a speedy present on his 20th birthday.
De Tullio has won the pole for seven of the 10 races this season in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing entry, just two shy of the series record of nine set by current NTT INDYCAR SERIES star Pato O’Ward in 2018. Despite his dominance of qualifying this season, the performance on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile road course came as a bit of a surprise to de Tullio, who was ninth in practice Friday.

“Super happy to get pole here at Road America, securing the pole for both races,” de Tullio said. “It’s amazing, especially the turnaround we had from practice, where we struggled yesterday. Converting it into two pole positions today is absolutely unreal.”
Qualifying was divided into two groups, with each driver’s quickest lap setting the grid for Race 1 and the second-quickest lap building the lineup for Race 2.
De Tullio’s best lap of 1 minute, 50.9975 seconds won the pole for Race 1, with his second-best lap of 1:51.0477 grabbing the top spot for Race 2.
Series leader Nikita Johnson will start second in both races after his best laps of 1:51.4233 and 1:51.5695 in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR car. Johnson leads HMD Motorsports teammates Enzo Fittipaldi and Tymek Kucharczyk by two and five points, respectively, in the standings for the INDYCAR development series.
Matteo Nannini qualified third for Race 1 at 1:51.3419 in the No. 20 Enve Motorsports car as Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR took two of the top three spots on the grid. Lochie Hughes will start fourth in Race 1 after his best lap of 1:51.5347 in the No. 26 Andretti Global entry.
Josh Pierson put another Andretti Global car in the first three rows of Race 1, as he will start fifth after his best lap of 1:51.3432 in the No. 29 Starchive Andretti machine. Rookie Jack Beeton started the best qualifying performance of his season by grabbing the sixth starting spot for Race 1 at 1:51.6020 in the No. 45 HMD Motorsports car.
In Race 2, Beeton produced a career-best starting spot of third with his lap of 1:51.6153. His previous best was fifth in March at Arlington. Nannini will start fourth for Race 2 at 1:51.4185, with Hughes fifth at 1:51.7355.
Pierson will start sixth in Race 2 after his second-best lap of 1:51.5319.
Max Taylor qualified third for Race 2 in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen car fielded by Andretti Global but will start ninth after receiving a six-spot grid penalty for both races due to a post-qualifying technical infraction. Taylor is fourth in the standings, just 27 points behind leader Johnson after eight of 17 races this season.
Among the two closest challengers to series leader Johnson, Fittipaldi qualified eighth for both races in the No. 67 HMD Motorsports machine, while Kucharczyk struggled, qualifying a season-worst 14th and 16th in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports car.
Now the challenge for de Tullio is to convert his top qualifying positions into victories. He has just one win this season, the second race of the doubleheader in late March at Barber Motorsports Park.
Race 1, a 20-lap event, starts at 12:30 p.m. ET today. The 18-lap Race 2 starts at noon ET Sunday. FS1, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls are covering both races live.
