Unpredictability was in the air this morning at Long Beach, as cooler temperatures and a surprise leader atop the warmup time sheets set the stage for the 50th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach this afternoon.

Graham Rahal, who qualified 16th in the 27-car field, jumped to the top in the 25-minute final practice with a time of 1 minute, 8.0151 seconds in the No. 15 Fleet Cost & Care Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The session took place under partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures in the high 50s on the iconic 11-turn, 1.968-mile temporary street circuit.

Up next is the 90-lap race at 4:30 p.m. ET on FOX, FOX Deportes, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. The air temperature is expected to climb into the high 60s by the green flag.

Two-time and reigning Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Josef Newgarden rebounded from a frustrating NTT P1 Award qualifying session Saturday to end up second. Newgarden, who qualified 15th, posted a top warmup lap of 1:08.3474 in the No. 3 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet.

Marcus Armstrong continued a solid weekend by posting the third-quickest lap, 1:08.4736, in the No. 66 SiriusXM/Root Insurance Honda of Meyer Shank Racing. Reigning Long Beach winner Scott Dixon was fourth at 1:08.6648 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five at 1:08.7636 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.

Pole winner Kyle Kirkwood ended up sixth at 1:08.9668 in the No. 27 PreFab Honda. Kirkwood’s Andretti Global teammate Colton Herta is starting second in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda but had a fraught warmup after a collision with the No. 51 Abel Construction Honda driven by rookie Jacob Abel of Dale Coyne Racing.

The right front of Herta’s car hit the left rear of Abel’s car near the pit entrance eight minutes into the session, triggering the only red flag. The right front of Herta’s car was damaged, he was penalized for five minutes for causing a red flag and ended up 19th at 1:10.0892.
