The weather made a dramatic change Saturday morning in Southern California, and so did the names at the top of the time sheets after the second practice for the 50th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Nolan Siegel jumped to the top of the board with his late lap of 1 minute, 7.1169 seconds in the No. 6 onsemi Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. It’s the quickest lap of the weekend and the first time second-year driver Siegel has led a session in his NTT INDYCAR SERIES career. He was 11th in the opening practice Friday on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile temporary street circuit.

“It builds a lot of confidence going into qualifying for the whole group,” Siegel said. “We rolled off really happy yesterday. We’ve made progress. We were strong the whole session.

“I’m looking forward to qualifying. I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve got. We’ll see. I’d like to make this my first (Firestone) Fast Six, as well.”

NTT P1 Award qualifying is next, at 2:30 p.m. ET today on FS2, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. The 90-lap race starts at 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).

Siegel led three drivers atop the time sheets who weren’t in the top five in Friday practice. Weather conditions changed dramatically Saturday morning, as cloudy skies with cooler temperatures replaced the sunny warmth of Friday. Track temperatures dropped into the 70s after soaring past 100 Friday.

Colton Herta was second at 1:07.1648 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda of Andretti Global. 2021 Long Beach winner Herta was eighth Friday.

Rookie Louis Foster climbed from 15th Friday to third today with a top lap of 1:07.2093 in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

One fact to keep in mind entering qualifying: Leader Siegel and Foster each turned their top laps on Firestone’s more grippy, faster alternate tire. Herta’s best lap came on the primary Firestone Firehawk tire, which has less grip but more durability.

Two-time Long Beach winner Will Power, who led Friday at 1:07.3227, was fourth today at 1:07.3407 in a display of consistency in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.

2023 Long Beach winner Kyle Kirkwood rounded out the top five at 1:07.3460 in the No. 27 PreFab Honda of Andretti Global. Kirkwood also is driving like a metronome, as he was third at 1:07.3523 on Friday.

Six-time series champion and reigning Long Beach winner Scott Dixon endured a fraught practice today. He clipped an outside wall entering Turn 6 with the right side of his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda early in the session, damaging the right rear wheel and toe link and creating a hole in a lower aerodynamic piece.

CGR mechanics did yeoman work to return Dixon to the track after just 10 minutes of repairs. Dixon ended up ninth at 1:07.5979.
